Most of you know that as a teenager on into young adulthood, I suffered from an eating disorder. I have been very open about my challenges with weight and I also have expressed, albeit vaguely, the reason for my warped sense of perception. Things from my childhood were imbedded in my psyche and it lead to a very unhealthy thought process pertaining to weight. YOU WILL FIND OUT ALL ABOUT IT IN MY NEW BOOK #shameless plug LOL. In any event, I want to be completely clear – my getting SMART LIPO was not due to those issues. I got Smart Lipo because I wanted it…

I am 40 years old, have had two children, eat right, work out and my body was not having it. I had reached a plateau and the inches were not coming off. I do not focus too much on weight because as most of you know, muscle weighs more than fat. A person can have a high weight and be smaller in size, look tone, svelte and sleek. I focus on the inches and they were not decreasing. Things were sagging, folds were in places I did not even know they could be and most importantly, my boyfriend was holding onto rolls of fat. I do not care what anyone says, that is NOT sexy. Therefore, I decided to seek help via cosmetic surgery.

I am very anal about research! I seek out the best in whatever field I am looking into and I found Dr. Chang in Miami which is where I was going to be at the time. I make sure that they are board certified, that they belong to certain organizations for their particular field, I investigate whether or not they have or have had malpractice suits and most importantly, I consult. I ask questions! I will meet with you at least 3 times or however many it takes before I feel comfortable with you and your bedside manner.

SmartLipo is different in that it uses a carefully calibrated laser to liquefy fat deposits through the top layers of the patient’s skin. The laser actually ruptures fat cells, and the resulting oily, liquid substance is then removed through a tiny incision in the skin by the surgeon. The small laser can also seal blood vessels as it zaps fat, so there is less swelling, bleeding and bruising than with traditional liposuction. The minimal invasiveness of the procedure allows patients to see faster results and to experience fewer complications. In addition, SmartLipo’s patients need only a local anesthetic (YOU WILL NOT BE PUT TO SLEEP-MAN UP!!!) for this procedure, whereas liposuction requires general anesthesia. Because the patient is not completely unconscious, SmartLipo carries much fewer risks than traditional liposuction, and the recovery time is much shorter.

A very small canula, or tube, approximately 1.0mm to 2.0mm in diameter containing a laser fiber is inserted into the skin. The canula is moved back and forth delivering the laser’s energy to the fat cells, causing them to rupture and easily drain away. The laser energy also interacts with the dermis it resulting in collagen shrinkage. Due to the small size of the canula, Smartlipoâ„¢ is a minimally invasive procedure and can be performed under local anesthesia The laser causes small blood vessels to coagulate immediately on contact, resulting in less bleeding, swelling and bruising, – and a quicker recovery time than conventional liposuction. Because general anesthesia is unnecessary, the procedure is very safe with only minimal side effects.

I have to be honest with the people who read my blog. It s the only way I know how to be…

Overall, I am happy with the results. The surgery took my thighs down several inches. However, you should not just depend on the surgery. You will have to continue to eat right and work out. Neither this surgery nor any other for that matter will NOT get rid of cellulite (to my knowledge) – sorry ladies! There are some new technologies out on the market, but I have not used them personally, so I can t speak on them.

He did not suck out all the fat LIKE I TOLD HIM TOO!!! LOL, but I am still happy. I feel great and my experience with the surgery was pleasant. No brusing, no pain after the second day (thank goodness for Vicodin LOL), no raised scarring what so ever. I was back at work by the third day. The oozing was mostly the fluid they used to liquify the fat mixed with blood – it comes out of the small openings because with this procedure, you do not get stitches. The openings are so small that your body heals through the natural healing process.

Would I recommend it? Only if you have realistic expectations. It is a surgery for people who need a little help in certain problem areas. If you are extremely overweight or considered obese, this is NOT the surgery for you – in my non-medical opinion. Would I recommend it for teenagers/young adults? NOPE – take your butt to the gym! Your metabolism is still at an all time high and if you work at it, you can still achieve the results you want. Do not be lazy. As I stated above, I worked out and ate right, to no avail. I needed the help, you 9 times out of 10 – do NOT. Try the gym – treadmill – Bootcamp – yoga…try every method first!

Sorry, I can not offer any insight into the cost of the procedure because every physician is priced differently. Most physicians are between $2500 and $10,000 depending on how many areas you are getting done. I can tell you that Dr. Chang is reasonably priced for those of you in Miami. Speak to Linda and tell her Tami from Basketball Wives sent you-she will give you a little discount.
